And now for something completely different!

I Could not sleep last night so ended up having my first go at a mixed media collage thingy and have to admit, really enjoyed doing this.
It kind of gave me sense of freedom to experiment, I think now I may delve into art journaling for the very same reasons.

The Colour was built up using thin layers of acrylic glazes, colours used were Decoart Traditions in transparent yellow iron oxide, quinadridone burnt orange , sap green and phthalo blue.

Book Obsession

I seem to have a bit of an obsession with altering hardback book covers at the moment.
An arch was first cut into the cover using a sharp knife, the heart is made from epoxy putty and the wings from a Dr Who figurine called The Weeping Angel.
The face on the cover was made by first turning an image into a threshold image on the computer and printing on plain paper.
It was then stuck it to the book and Tripple Thick was used to fill in the black areas.
Modeling paste was applied to other areas and stamped into.

Once everything was dry Decoart Traditions acrylic paint was layered and a little gold leaf added.

Books are so cheap to buy in charity shops, they are just like mini canvases to experiment on..

When Timeworn Met the Book of Secrets!

Hello,
I ran a workshop at the Stamp Attic in Wantage on Saturday and got very inspired by what I saw there.

Lewis, a participant on the Book of Secrets workshop I held there a few weeks back had used the techniques on an artists manikin and gave it wings, I wished I had my camera with me at the time so I could show you.
I met some lovely people on the workshop and just want to say a big hello to you all, and thanks for all the laughs!!
Anyway I will get to the point, I also met Sue Roddis there who's work I absolutely love, I was lucky enough to have a look at some of her journal work, it was the front cover of one of these journals along with the winged manikin that inspired the artwork below, its the Book box from the Book of Secrets workshop, painted with techniques using Decoart Traditions from the Timeworn workshop!

Hope you likey!

Take Flight Heart Shrine

I still have a few of the Tando gothic arch blanks left and decided to make a small hanging shrine with one

page

I sculpted the heart and vein's from epoxy clay and covered them with silver leaf before adding washes of translucent acrylic paint.

Decoart two part crackle glaze was then applied before adding the book paper and embellishments.

These little shrines are so quick to do as a small project.

Getting Excited!!

The Book of Secrets workshop starts this Friday with its very own dedicated website, all the hard work is now done and I am confident that this new format will be much more user friendly.
I am so excited to see what everyone participating creates with the techniques, for me this and the friendly banter on the workshop forums make it so much fun!

Here is a grunge book cover I posted on my Facebook page  earlier, it was an experiment stamping into Decoart Modeling paste on grunge board, because this stuff is flexible it worked very well…. Opps sorry about the steampunk glasses Gorjuss!!

Here is a link to how I do this technique.  Texture Stamping.

THE MAD MUSEUM

capture-20120515-102421

Whilst in a hotel a few weeks back, I found a leaflet for a new museum in Stratford Upon Avon, Not had chance to visit yet but am going to soon.

The MAD museum is a wonderful and exciting collection of machines incorporating gears, chains, pulleys and whirligig paraphernalia. The exhibits fall into three areas:

  • Kinetic Art = art in motion
  • Automata = interesting mechanical contraptions
  • Steampunk = modern gizmos with a Victorian twist

Superbly engaging for all ages, the museum offers an extravaganza of visual entertainment with lots of rolling balls and plenty of clanking and rattling thrown in for good measure! There are both large and small exhibits inside and outside, the MAD garden offers wind and water powered features and sculptures to really blow you away!

And finally a new mixed media canvas, this one is 12 x 16"

Give your journal cover a splash of colour!

Below is a gesso carved journal I worked on this morning for an upcoming workshop.
While on the subject of workshops I have just been informed that there has been a late cancelation on my Rock Book workshop at Paper Arts in Stroud this weekend… you can call 01453 886038 to book this last place or visit http://www.paperarts.co.uk/
The book incorporates the layering and glazing of Decoart Traditions acrylic paint, hope you like :)
I may even start journaling in it….. although I am so messy I can just see all the pages just sticking together in one big clump!!

    Chest of Secrets!

I have had few emails from people in the US who are registered on the upcoming Book of Secrets workshop asking if the workshop can only be completed using the wooden book with secret drawer as they can not acquire it… The answer is no, this technique can be applied to all manner of boxes so today, I decided to make a wooden chest just to prove the point.
It's not quite finished and I have used different colours but it's the exact same technique.
    DSC_0932

It's been a busy few days and have not been active on Blogger or Facebook, hopefully next week things will settle down a little.
I travel up to Preston Tomorrow and will be demonstrating on Saturday at Inspirations at Card craft Plus in The Capitol Centre, Preston, Lancs, PR5 4AW.

Hopefully I will get a better hotel than last week as when I walked into the room, the last guests dirty socks were still layed there in the middle of the floor, no hot water and a 1hr wait for breakfast!!
Ok, got to go as there's so much to do :(…  I will leave you with a little Steampunk Tag… again not finished!… but nearly!!
