HIDDEN HEART CANVAS

Hello all!

I've had such a fantastic time playing with a couple of DecoArt's newest product lines from their Paint Pouring Program. So easy to use and I cannot express enough how much FUN they are!

Andy has been demoing this crazy new product at several Craft and Hobby Shows.  HERE is a video of him in action.

Here is my finished piece using an 8" x 8" canvas, DecoArt's new Pouring Mediums and other DecoArt products, pieces from Andy's fabulous Industrial Elements Kit from Tando Creative as well as the Clock Hands from Tando Creative, two of Andy's wonderful new Illusionary Artists stamp sets and some odds and ends from my craft stash.

Ready to dive into the process?  Let's go ...

First I chose several pieces from Andy's Industrial Elements Tando Creative set.  These are wonderful heavy grey board pieces that accept any kind of art medium you torture them with. First I covered the door plate with DecoArt's Media Modeling Paste using a palette knife to smooth it out and leave a not thick but substantial base coat.  Then I gently heat set it were still a tiny bit tacky on the top but almost dry. I spritzed the Ouija Board Stamp from Andy's Spook Stamp Set with water and randomly pressed it into the Modeling Paste. Immediately clean your stamp after this process! Then I heat set it.  Next I added a bit of DecoArt Media Crackle Paste here and there on two miscellaneous frames and randomly on the door plate and let it air dry. It if very important to not heat set the Crackle Paste!

Now to add some wonderful color to these pieces!  I brushed DecoArt Media Yellow Oxide over all of the pieces and gently heat set it.  I love using my fingers when I work so I rubbed DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream in Raw Umber all over the pieces and then wiped off the excess using a paper towel.  Be sure to work the cream down into the crevasses so that you get that really aged look.

Now for the rusting technique to really age the grey board pieces I am adding! In this photo, you can the various pieces that I am using as they age step by step with several layers of DecoArt Media products.
First (left) I applied DecoArt Media Metallic Silver to all of the pieces using my fingers. Next I added bits of Media Metallic Gold over the silver. Next I randomly add Media Carbon Black to give some depth and definition to each piece. At this point, the pieces look like old and weathered metal.  Now for the RUST!  Ah...one of my favorite Fluid Acrylics ... Quinacridone Gold!  I randomly add this lovely "rust" all over the pieces using my finger to tap and smear it on.  Finally, I use a combination of Media Titan Buff and Cobalt Teal Hue to create a lovely patina effect.  I apply the Titan Buff first to give a calcified look and then lightly tap over it with the Cobalt Teal Hue to add the patina effect. LOVE the results! IN the inset, you can see two book plates that are finished using this rusting technique and then the words "Hidden" and "Heart" from Andy's Illusionary Artists Word Up Stamp Set added.

This is the general layout of the pieces as I envision them on the canvas. Looks very old and medieval, doesn't it?  I used two sets of matching Clock Hands from Tando's set by the same name.  I cut the ends of the hands off a bit and overlapped the hands. Then I placed the book plates on top of them.  They remind me of old metal wrought iron on a window.

Now for the background ... my 8' X 8" canvas using DecoArt's Pouring Medium and Clear Pouring Top Coat.  This picture shows a closeup of the beautiful layers and runs you get using this product.  I used DecoArt Media Titanium White, Cobalt Teal Hue and Vermilion as my color choices. You simply mix a ratio of the Pouring Medium into each color of paint (depending on the type of paint you are using) and stir it. Then I combined all three paints into one cup. I placed the blank canvas on top of the cup, turned it upside down and then pulled the cup up to release the paint onto the canvas.  Next I lifted the canvas and moved it from side to side; watching the paint ooze and move in different directions.
IT WAS FASCINATING TO WATCH! I let the canvas dry overnight. Then I applied the Clear Pouring Topcoat which leaves a lovely glossy finish.  I also let it dry overnight.

Here is a photo of the finished canvas as I am beginning to put all of my pieces together. I placed a piece of vintage lace in the center of the canvas.  My other Grey Board pieces would be glued over it.  In the inset you see a metal flower that I cut apart to use in the corners of this canvas.

And again...here is the finished piece with all of it's rust, crackles, patina, and metal embellishments to finish it off. Thanks so much for stopping by!  I hope you learned a little bit about a technique or a product you've been interested in trying.
