Andy Skinner: Clockwork Heart by Hannah Oxberry

Hi all, welcome to my next project for Andy Skinner's Creative Team. I wanted to create a piece with plenty of textures and layers using metallic effects as my base.

The finished piece focuses on a clockwork heart theme. The book plate and clock dial have been given a rusty treatment, while the tag features a metallic gold base layered with washes.

DecoArt Media Texture Sand Paste gives the clock dial and flaming heart a great texture on which to build the rusty paint effect. To the centre of the dial I have added and acrylic circle stamped with a stamp from Andy Skinners' Stempunk stamp set from Stampendous, using Staz On ink. To the reverse of the acrylic circle I have added a layer of crackle glaze with carbon black antiquing cream. This gives a weathered look while still being able to see the base of the tag through the circle.

The flaming heart has been given the same rusty treatment, while decoupage papers give the middle of the heart another dimension. I have added liquid glass to the centre of the heart to tie in with shine from the acrylic circle.

To give the piece height, the dial and heart have been mounted on a greyboard off cut weathered using chalky finish paints, crackle medium and washes.

The tag base features a texture effect, inspired by fellow team mate Suz Humphreys, created by blasting the painted surface with a heat tool until it bubbles. Over this washes of Paynes Grey, Prussian Blue Hue and Quinacridone Gold have been added, the washes have been built to add more intensity. I have used Metallic Lustre Gold Rush across the surface of the tag, this highlights the textures.

To the centre of the rusted book plate I have added the word "Heart" from Illusionary Artists Word Up & Numbers stamp set, and across the tag I have also stamped images from Illusionary Artists Tech Trauma stamp set using Versafine Vintage Sepia ink.
