Specimen's from the Congo 1806

Had great fun making these specimen jars for Halloween, I coloured the water with distress re inkers and painted cheap toys or modelled items from clay to go inside.

The labels were distressed with paint, sandpaper and then ink and finally the lids were sealed with beeswax.

Cheap and easy decorations that the kids would love!… or maybe not….

Altered Moroccan Frame

I picked up this cool Moroccan Picture frame last week with the idea of altering it.

DSC_0052

It is made from Acacia wood and had a simple white wash applied with a little distressed sanding.

I began by adding lots of different colour washes using Decoart Americana and Traditions acrylic paint. A layer of gesso was added on top of  each colour wash and sanded and scrapped back to reveal some of the layer below.
The shutter doors I decided would look good rusty as well as the embellishment's…
I know.. I know but I cant help it!! I had to add some rust, I am just totally drawn to its fantastic vibrant colours… I am the same when it comes to Moroccan spices!

Here are the finished results, you can click the pictures for a larger view.

I made a box to fit behind the frame opening to fill with a few curiosities.
The picture is of a Moroccan mother and child to which I constructed a driftwood frame around.

Fibres and lace were attached to back of the driftwood frame,  a heart made from Lutrador and a TH number plaque (rusted obviously:) were attached to the driftwood.

The background of the box was painted with Decoart Crackle texture and some Moroccan postal papers were glued into place.

This project actually took my much longer than I had planned for but was good fun to do.

Send in the Clown

Todays tutorial features the circus set.
Both the Circus and Sideshow sets work quite well together, as the samples below show.

Before I continue, the new Evil Elixir workshop invites start to go out today, you have 30 days if you wish to register, details can be found HERE.

Ok on to the tutorial, I wanted to make a tag that resembled part of vintage circus poster that had been torn from the wall… well that was the idea anyway :)

circus (Small)

1. Tear a tag shape with your hands, I am using 300 gsm card.
DSC_0794

2. This next step is an option if you have the materials and equipment.
Print a design of your choice onto paper using a laser printer, or have it printed at a print shop where they generally use laser.
DSC_0795

3. Spray the printed side of the image with a generous coat of Americana gloss sealer.
DSC_0796

4. Immediately after spraying,  place the paper printed side down on top of your tag.
Burnish the back of the image with you fingers for approx 10 to 20 seconds.
DSC_0797

5. Remove the paper and hey presto!!
DSC_0798
The image will have transferred onto the card.
I do have videos and tutorials on this image transfer technique which can be found HERE in the tutorials area.
DSC_0799

6. Blend some old paper distress ink over the background.
DSC_0801

7. Now scrunch the card in to a ball a couple of times..Yikes!!
DSC_0802

8. unfold the creased card and run it through a big shot between the two plates on top of the multi surface platform with both tabs down.
This will flatten the card but retain the creases.
DSC_0803
If you want the card even flatter lay a piece of Grunge paper on top also.
DSC_0804

9. Pick up just a small amount of Frayed Burlap onto a blending tool and lightly (LIGHTLY) skim the surface, just picking up the peaks of the creases.
DSC_0805
DSC_0806

9. Stamp the text with Frayed Burlap and the ellyflump with Faded Jeans.
DSC_0807

10. Stamp the circus poster with Fired Brick.
DSC_0809

11. For the clown and extra stars,  I first applied fired brick to the stamp and then patted it a few times with Aged Mahogany before stamping.
The word Circus was stamped with Black Soot.
DSC_0810

12. Finally I blended Frayed Burlap around the torn edges and added a ribbon.

13. for the ribbon, I applied Faded Jeans and fired brick distress stains, sprayed with water and scrunched up into a little ball and dried with a heat tool.
Once dry I stamped the small stars on with Sepia Archival ink.

It's all in Black & White

Here is the first step by step, the title of this post will become obvious at the end I promise.
This first tutorial is a very simple rust technique using one of the stamps from the Tempting textures set.

Tempting Textures (Small)

Here are the results.
DSC_0261

DSC_0766

1. Paint a thin layer of Americana Burnt Sienna onto a non stick craft sheet using a square brush.
DSC_0736

2.Using the rust stamp in you hand, rather than an acrylic block.  Pick up the Burnt Sienna from the craft sheet and stamp the tag turning the stamp in different directions to avoid uniformity.

3. Next blend Distress ink, walnut stain over the entire tag, you can also use Vintage photo for a less intense effect, have a play!

4. Stamp some cogs and rust runs from the Steampunk Accessories set with Walnut Stain.

5. Stamp elements from the Letting off Steam set in Ranger Black Archival Ink.

6. Blend Distress ink in Black Soot around the edge of the tag.

7.place the tag in the Heavy Duty Embossing folder by Courture Creations and emboss.

8. Using the side of a pencil, highlight the edges of the embossed card subtlety to mimic worn rust.
DSC_0761DSC_0764

9. The cogs were die cut from the Tim holtz on the edge steampunk die, cut into three and given the same treatment.
These were then stuck to the back of the tag using Glue and seal Matte.
DSC_0766

Ok this bit was just for fun!
As a challenge I wanted to make a tag using only Black Ink and resists.
Black-and-White

Letting of Steam (Medium)Steampunk accesories (Medium)Tempting Textures (Small)

1. This is one of Lindsay Masons new stamps. I have stamped it with Ranger Black Archival.
DSC_0724

2. Next brush over the stamped text with Ranger Glue and seal Matte to mask it.
Huge Thanks to Lindsay mason for the glue technique x
DSC_0725

3.Paint a thin layer of Americana Titanium White onto a non stick craft sheet using a square brush.
DSC_0726

4. Using the grunge stamp in you hand or on an acrylic block,  pick up the Titanium White from the craft sheet and stamp the tag,  turning the stamp in different directions to avoid uniformity.
stamp the Large Steampunk clock from the letting off Steam set in the top left hand corner with Glue & Seal Matte.

DSC_0727

5. Have a bowl of water handy in which to place your stamps. Place them stamp side down in the water, this will stop the acrylic paint from drying on them, you can scrub them clean easily with a nail brush.

DSC_0728

6. Now blend Distress Black Soot over the entire tag, you will notice that the Black Soot turns the white paint a subtle shade of Grey whereas the glue resists the ink more and remains bright!…
DSC_0729

Quite a cool background!
DSC_0731

7. Paint a thin layer of Americana Titanium White onto a non stick craft sheet, using a square brush.
Stamp the power meter and steam engine technical drawings with the Titanium White.

8. Finally Stamp the cogs and steampunk text stamp with Black Archival…
One tag…One colour Ink!

More to come tomorrow!
