Dark Secret - Altered Book Cover for March Challenge

So, I decided to alter the cover of a book, that I had in my library forever. It's a story collection by Stephen King, called "The Bazaar of Bad Dreams". That was dark enough to inspire me :)))

I was so thrilled to start creating again, so I thought of making a process video, to show you some ideas on how to create dimension and texture on your projects. In the video, you'll see that I use very simple and easy-to-find materials, that we all have in our houses.

What is more, I wanted to share with you some tips on how to use stamps and stencils, in a not so common way.

The Witch Behind the Mask

Morning all and happy week, this is Natassa Blazaki, with a new project for Spooktober. That challenge inspired me so much!

The Witch Behind the Mask

So, it’s the last week of October and the theme now is “The Witching Hour”. As I was google searching for witches and witchcrafts to get some inspiration, I saw a poster from Disney’s
Snow White that shows the face of magic mirror and the reflection of the Witch’s face. I got the idea of creating this canvas with a mask, that behind it hides the wicked witch.

Of course it had to be rough, with lots of texture and rust. Rust goes with everything!

I used shades of yellow, orange and purple, which is a classic color palette for the Halloween.

To create that rough, uneven texture on the canvas, I used a lot of Structure Paste, which I thickly applied with a pallet knife in a stippling motion. To color the background I used a combination of Artist Pigments and Matt Chalk Paints.

To create the “hood” around the mask, I used a piece of denim, cut from an old pair of jeans. I glued the mask on the canvas and then I cut the fabric in smaller manageable pieces and built the “hood”. I glued the fabric with gel medium.

Then, I decided that my composition needed an industrial touch, so I used some of the gears from Andy’s greyboard cutouts by Tando Creative.

The tricky part was to do the stamping on that surface. I just couldn’t get a nice crisp impression until it hit me! I took a piece of rice paper from Andy’s “Abstraction” collection, and stamped on it. Then, I cut it to size and glued it on the canvas with matte medium. This way, the stamp was beautifully embedded on the rough surface and had a gorgeous cloudy faux encaustic look.

I also used lots of Mixed Media Transfers on the canvas the mask and the fabric. To make them look distressed, I sanded them with a piece of 240 grit sandpaper.

DEAD MAN'S HAND

Hello Everyone!

Welcome back and thanks for stopping by! Today I am sharing a 5" x 7" canvas created especially for a Spooktober Challenge from Andy Skinner and Traci McLean of Creative Expressions. Week one; October 4th - 10th is themed "Skulls".

If you are a poker player, you've heard of a "Dead Man's Hand" that consists of aces and eights. Andy's Skull of Spades and Stonewash stamps with a transfer black spider from Horror Mixed Media Transfers from Creative Expressions provide the PERFECT combination for this idea.

This was a fun and easy Halloween project to create especially with all of the wonderful products from Andy and Creative Expressions!

I began with a piece of speciality stamping paper (has a bit of a slick finish and is almost like a cardstock feel). Using permanent black ink, I stamped the skull ace image. Then I cut out around it to make it look like a 4 3/4" x 3 1/4" playing card. I rounded the edges with a corner punch. Next I used the permanent black ink and ramdonly stamped partial images from the Stonewash stamp to give a weathered, rough feeling to the card. Heat set. Aren't these great stamps?

I used a bit of Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Yellow Artist Pigment Paint mixed with a bit of water to create a wash effect and brushed it onto the card. I wiped away excess color. Heat set. Next was a light wash using Quinacridone Gold Artist Pigment Paint and wiped the excess. Heat set. Finally a touch of Payne's Grey Artist Pigment Paint wash around the edges of the card. Using a ruler, I drew a straight line 1/4" from the edges around the card and rounded the line ad the rounded edges of the card using a permanent black ink pen to frame the card. Heat set. I then rubbed the scary black spider from Andy's Horror Mixed Media Image Transfers onto the left side of the card.

This ghoulish ghost is perfect for coming out around the back corner of the card. This is a transfer from Andy's Horror Mixed Media Transfer images. I also added a top hat from his buddy who is also on the Horror Mixed Media Transfer Sheet. I transferred these two images onto a piece of white computer paper and fussy cut them out. I cut the hat our and added it to the ghost's head to make him look more like a gambler ghost.

I added Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Lava Paste to a metallic number "8" and heat set it. The heat activates the Lava Paste and turns it into some amazing bubbly texture as you see in the inset. When cool, I painted the eight with Black Acrylic paint followed by Quinacridone Red Acrylic Paint around the bottom as if the eight is bleeding out.

Now for the canvas base! First I added Andy's beautiful Rice Paper image from his Tiles collection. This was done using Matte Medium generously brushed onto the canvas. I laid the Rice Paper in the center of the canvas over the Matte Medium and then burnished it to remove all wrinkles and air bubbles. Then a coat of Matte Medium brushed over the Rice Paper to seal it. Heat set. Next, using my finger, I added Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Strata Paste on either side of the canvas (to hide where the Rice Paper did not cover). Heat set. This Strata Paste gives such a tactile edging! I LOVE IT!

I painted the edging using Andy's Payne's Grey Cosmic Simmer Artist Pigment Paint. Look how beautifully it adds to the tile Rice Paper.

Still using the Cosmic Shimmer :Payne's Grey Artist Pigment Paint, I stenciled all of the letters I would need to create the "DEAD MANS HAND" tiles for the canvas. This was done on a piece of creme card stock and using Andy's Redemption Stencil. I cut out around the letters, added a light touch using a cotton ball with a hint of Cosmic Shimmer Yellow and water wash then edges with my finger and a touch of Payne's Grey Artist Pigment Paint. Now it's time to assemble everything and glue it into place!

The letter are glued in place using a small adhesive pad under each one. I also added adhesive pads underneath the "8" and the gambler ghost to give the canvas more dimension. Also a little scrap of black netting was glued underneath the Ace for added interest.

Add a little "blood" using Quinacridone Red Acrylic Paint to the "8" and let it run down onto the letter tiles. Wha-lah! You have a fun Halloween decor piece! Be sure to check out all of Andy's products at Creative Expressions website. Links are listed below! #spooktober

Steampunk Style Canvas

Hello Everyone!

Welcome back to Andy's blog. It's Candy here and I am sharing my latest steampunk canvas with you.

This little 4" x 5" canvas may be small in size but packs a powerful statement when hanging on a wall.

Andy has partnered with the fantastic people at Creative Expressions. His line features many amazing products with new ones recently being released.

Now let's dive into the process to make this canvas and all of the products used:

Begin by ramdonly spreading some of Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Strata Paste over the surface of the 4" x 5" canvas. I have done this with a palette knife. This gives a wonderful textural appearance to the canvas with it's thick smears and bits of what looks like mica and other textural elements. Heat set to dry.

Now for Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Lava Paste. Again, applied randomly with a palette knife, the Lava Paste "explodes" with dimension when heat set. I love the added interest those little raised areas provide. Gently heat with the heat tool. Let cool for a few minutes before continuing.

At this point, your canvas will look something like this. Crazy texture and dimension!

Using Andy's new Mixed Media Transfers: Steampunk and Ephemera Emporium; I added the black detail to the very uneven surface using the little sticks included with the transfers. They are a nice thickness of transfer and adhere to the surface so well.

Here you can get a closer look at the Mixed Media Transfer Images I chose to use as well as the addition of the fabulous Andy Skinner Cosmic Shimmers Super Nova Embossing Powder. With it's rich charcoal color with silver metallic pieces mixed in, this embossing powder gives very cool detail. This design of the waterfall dots is from Andy Skinner's Creative Expressions Enigma Stamp. Just stamp the image using an Embossing Ink pad. Shake the jar and then sprinkle the embossing powder over the stamped image. Remove all of the excess powder back into the jar. Gently heat set with a heat tool so as not to damage the Mixed Media Transfers.

Now your canvas will look something like this and it's time to add the color .... GLORIOUS COLOR!!

There are six wonderful Andy Skinner Cosmic Shimmer Artist Pigment Paint colors. For this canvas, I chose Cobalt Teal, Quinacridone Gold and Yellow. These paints go on so easily and they are transparent enough that you will see all of the black detail from the Mixed Media Transfers even when painted over! I used a mix of about 60% paint to 40% water to create the colorful background. You can also blend the colors together easily with these paints as they such wonderful quality paints with their transparency. I also applied some stronger consistency of paint along the top and sides and gave them a mist with a water bottle. They run beautifully down the canvas.

Before I started adding the metal pieces to the canvas, I decided to add some more of the Cosmic Shimmer Super Nova Embossing Powder randomly on the sides of the canvas. To do this, I simply touched the Embossing Ink Pad to random edges of the canvas. Then I sprinkled the Embossing Powder over the ink and removed the excess back into the jar. Then I brushed away an extra powder I did not want on the canvas with a small paint brush. Then gently heat set the powder in place. You can see the dark gray metallic mixed areas around the edge of the canvas.

I had some metallic pieces in my stash that I thought would bring even more life to this canvas and give it even more of a funky steampunk feeling. To glue all of these pieces in place, I used Andy Skinner's Cosmic Shimmer Quick Grab Glue. It dries clear and doesn't take long to set up.

Around the edge of the canvas, I first added 1/2" double sided tape and then covered it with a 1/2" piece of black washi tape with scientific table on it. Very steampunkish!

Finally, to give this canvas a very different mechanism to hang it. I fashioned a little wire loop to hang the canvas on a wall using some of Andy Skinner's Rusted Wire. This was glued in place using the Quick Grab Glue. Then I screwed two little eye hooks in place 3/4" from the outside edge of the canvas. Next I simply wrapped wire around a little 6" ruler that had been tinted with Andy's Cosmic Shimmer Yellow Artist Pigment Paint. The edges of the ruler were blackened by wiping black acrylic paint across the edges using my finger. First wrap the wire one time around the ruler and then run the free edge through the eye hook. Be sure to have the ruler hanging from each eye hook the same length. Then wrap the rest of the wire around the ruler. Done!

I completely did this project in two hours. It was fun and easy and working with these products is truly so much fun!
