Danger Tag by Monika Maksym

Hello! 

  Today I wanted to share with you my grungy, industrial tag I've created lately.

These are two separate greyboard tags, larger one is size 10 from Tando Creative and the smaller one comes in Tagtastic 2 sets.

I've started with applying base colour to both of the tags which was 1:1 mixture of Media Fluid Acrylic paints in Black and Burnt Umber. 

I've added candle wax resist in random places, to create worn out look. I've painted the small tag in Burnt Orange Acrylic Paint and large with Chalky Finish Paint in Whisper. Once heated I was able to rub off the areas where candle wax was previously applied revealing what's underneath.

Both tags were stamped with black Archival ink, then I've added washes of Burnt Umber and Quinacridone Gold Media Fluid Acrylics.

Last step was to add a little bit of texture using stencil and Modeling Paste in Black and add cut out stamped skeleton embellishment.

Industrial style box by Monika Maksym

It's Monika here with my newest project. 

This time I will show you how to create quick and easy industrial box.  For my project I’m using 16x 16 x7cm wooden box.

First step was to apply modeling paste through stencils on the lid and on the front. Then, using strong craft glue I’ve added bolt heads and washer on each corner of the box and small cogs on the front. Make sure the glued elements and modeling paste are fully dry before applying black chalky finish or acrylic paint, then rub on a candle stick over the stencilled areas.

  Before adding  a coat of grey chalky paint I’ve used weathered wood medium in random places on each side of the box.

 Next, using medium grade sanding paper I’ve lightly sanded bolts and stencilled areas revealing black paint underneath.

 Washes of Fluid Acrylics in Paynes Grey ,Quinacridone Gold and Red Oxide helped me achive rusty look around the edges and bolts.

Then I’ve stamped the background using waterproof ink pad and my favourite collection of Tech Trauma and Steampunk stamps.

 As a last step I’ve used matt varnish for ultimate vintage look.

Hello lovely peeps! I have done a Tag trio with Andy's amazing new stamps. 

With lots of lovely Deco Art media paints, pastes & potions! Plus a little 

bit of triple embossing Just for me! I hope you all enjoy the this post

using Andy's new stamp set Bird's and Bones.

So I used the following Tando creative products, Andy Skinner Industrial elements,
and the Tando's greyboard size 10 tag.  These have an amazing capacity for
mixed media projects of all kinds they don't buckle or bend with media
products such as pastes, paints, water, glazes and can be painted and sanded.

Top Tag

• Take the centre of the door hanger's frame (primary Elements set)put a hole in the top & paint it black. 
• Cover in versa mark ink and follow with gold embossing powder, heat set
• Repeat the above step with chunky clear embossing powder.
• Do this a third time with gold, heat setting at each stage.
• Ink up your chosen stamp with versatile onyx black.
• Heat your tag with your gun until molten then working quickly push your inked stamp in leave a second then peel of.

• Coat with black antiquing cream knock back when dry follow with patina.
• Polish up so that the gold shows through.
• The letters were made with art moulds and paper clay.
• I painted them Deco Art media fluid acrylic Raw Umber.
• Antiquing cream in patina black and white.
• brushed with pearl lustre to get the metal look. 
• Edge in area's with quinacridone gold.

Here's a photo of all three spread out. 

You can just make out the edging that I did with quinacridone gold to make a hint

of rust to the corners.

Middle Tag

• Industrial door hanger set with the circle removed and the key hole
• Paint with Deco art Media fluid acrylic Cobalt Teal, Cobalt Turquoise, Edge with Prussian Blue  Hue.

• Edge the circle and edges with black antiquing cream the centre with patina and white knock back each coat before applying the next.
• A coat of ultra matt varnish to seal.
• Stamp in gold fluid acrylic using Andy's crackle stamp from the Industrial set

• Coat with Decoupage matt sealer
• Apply one step crackle and allow to dry 
• Black antiquing cream knock back with soft cloth, seal with matt varnish
• Wash with very watery Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide build the coats

• Go back in and edge with Deco's Chalky Finish Carbon use a baby wipe to lift it in area's
• Do the Same with Deco's Chalky Finish Everlasting
• Sand back till happy withe the result.

• Tripple emboss the Bird skull from Andy's new set Bird's and bones
• Stamp the image onto white card
• Cut out the image and cut out area's that you want to use from your embossed image.
• For the ends I used some embossed bits that I had on my desk you can use any of Andy's background stamps for this just use black card and cut out.

Base Tag

• Tando size 10 tag modelling paste put through Andy's shredded stencil.
• Watery coat of white gesso followed by black knock back with a baby wipe.
• Watery white gesso was flicked across to create splatter.
• A couple of coats of Sap green Media fluid acrylic mixed with Americana Glazing medium.
• A coat of patina antiquing cream knocked back when dry followed by white, seal with soft touch varnish.
• Bronze mica powder spritzed with water and allowed to run.
• Skeleton from Andy's new stamp set stamped with archival black onto white card cut out and applied to tag with media matt medium.

Getting Excited!!

The Book of Secrets workshop starts this Friday with its very own dedicated website, all the hard work is now done and I am confident that this new format will be much more user friendly.
I am so excited to see what everyone participating creates with the techniques, for me this and the friendly banter on the workshop forums make it so much fun!

Here is a grunge book cover I posted on my Facebook page  earlier, it was an experiment stamping into Decoart Modeling paste on grunge board, because this stuff is flexible it worked very well…. Opps sorry about the steampunk glasses Gorjuss!!

Modeling Paste Technique Explained.

I have received quite a few emails asking me to explain my dry brushing technique on stamped Decoart modeling paste.
A tutorial on how to apply and stamp into the modeling paste can be found HERE.

Dry-brushing involves passing a paint brush that has almost no paint, over the surface of a texture to highlight and make edges stand out.
The technique is best employed when it is used with subtlety.
For this example I have used stamps from both myself and Lindsay Mason.

1.  I apply a base coat first with a colour that I want to show through the dry brushed colours.
Here I have used Decoart Traditions in Permanent Alizarin Crimson.


2.  Next I load just the tip of a dry flat hogs hair brush with my next colour, you want to start dark and gradually build up with lighter colours.
Once the brush tip is loaded I wipe some off the paint of onto a kitchen towel and start lightly brushing over the surface of the stamped texture, allowing some of the base coat to show through. Here I have used Americana Hauser Dark Green.


3. I have repeated the process next with Hauser Light Green but this time taken more paint of onto the kitchen towel, so a dryer brush.
The direction of brushing is very important and should be perpendicular to any edges or raised detail.

4. Here it is after the Hauser Light Green has been applied, you can see the detail just starting to pop.


5. Next I have dry brushed with a little Americana Teal Green, not all over but in random places.


6. Here I have loaded the brush with Americana Avocado Dip and taken much of the paint off onto the kitchen towel and dry brushed all over. 

7. I have mixed a little Americana Titanium White with the Avocado Dip and repeated step 6.


8. Finally, with pure Titanium White loaded, I wipe off onto the kitchen towel until only a trace of paint is left on the brush and brush over the surface.

9. Here it is finished, as you can see all the underlying colours are visible still in places.

New Book

Hi everyone,

Just a quick post to show you this mornings experiment.
A few weeks ago I saw a steampunk book on the web that had a rock like finish, I tried to find it again this morning but to no avail but decided to have a go at creating my own version using Decoart Modeling Paste and Decoart Texture Sand Fine.
After yesterdays disaster I am really happy with how this has turned out.
